Residential Air Duct Cleaning: What Actually Happens in Your Home

A walkthrough of a whole-home duct cleaning from register removal to final fog, so you know whether the crew you hired is doing the full job.

A complete residential air duct cleaning starts before the truck arrives. The crew should walk the home, identify every supply and return register, cover or move sensitive belongings near each opening, and confirm the access points they will cut into the ductwork (and later patch). If no one mentions access holes, ask where they plan to reach the trunk lines.

The standard method is negative-air source removal: a large HEPA-filtered vacuum is connected to the trunk line to put the system under suction, then each branch is agitated from the register back toward the vacuum using rotary brushes, air whips, or skipper balls. Loose debris is pulled out rather than blown further into the home.

After the branches and trunk are clean, the air handler or furnace plenum, blower compartment, and (if accessible) the evaporator coil are cleaned. Supply and return register boots are wiped down. This is where many discount jobs stop — but a sanitizing pass, when requested, is applied to the cleaned duct interior and allowed the labeled dwell time.

Before the crew leaves, they should show you the debris they removed, patch any access cuts, replace the filters, and give you a post-service report. A job that ends with 'we ran a brush down each vent' and no visible debris, no access holes, and no report is almost certainly incomplete.
